Particle size distribution and concentration are important characteristics of aerosols with respect to their physical, chemical and hygienic properties. In a first part methods are discussed which are adapted for sampling, concentration measurement by weighing or microscopic counting, and particle size determination by microscopic sizing. In a second part light scattering methods for the simultaneous measurement of concentration and particle size are described. The influence of particle scattering properties, non-isokinetic sampling and coincidence loss on the accuracy of measured values is discussed. Final a device, used for the external dilution of highly concentrated aerosols is described.
