A New Kind of Hydroxoaluminate Anion
DOI:

The investigation of the structure of α-Ba2[Al4(OH)16] by X-rays has established a new kind of hydroxoaluminate anion consisting of a cluster of four edge-sharing octahedra. This is compared with the ions found in Ba3 [Al(OH)6]2 and Ba2[Al2(OH)10], which are isolated octahedra and pairs of edge-sharing octahedra, respectively. Since all these products have been precipitated from solution, the structure of these anions might give some hints as to species present in aqueous solution.
