The fuel cell research concerns problems of electrochemical kinetics and catalysis and in its advanced stage in addition technological problems. The strong efforts in the USA especially within the last few years made it possible to construct fuel cell power stations in the megawatt region. The goal is to determine if they can be economic for electric utilities. Nevertheless there are still existing enormous problems for the two fuel cell generations under construction. These problems are being discussed.
The greatest demand of the fuel cell research is to develop non noble metal catalysts working in acid medium. The present state in this field is discussed in detail with the special emphasis on the mechanisms of the oxygen reduction on chelates.
Finally, future problems to be solved are being assembled.
