Abstract

It is shown that irradiation of allylbenzonitriles (1-3), methyl 4-allylbenzoate (4), and allylbenzaldehydes (5-7) in acetone solution through a Pyrex filter lead to the formation of the corresponding cyclopropyl compounds in good yields (see scheme 1 and 2). The transformations occur via aromatic di-π-methane rearrangement most likely in the triplet state.
