Abstract

The first total synthesis of (±)-petasol (2) as well as a new synthesis for isopetasol (1) is described. Pure (±)-isopetasol is available by a simple 10-step-sequence with a total yield of 10% (Scheme 2). If the reaction conditions of steps h, i,j, are carefully controlled, the same procedure leads predominantly to the thermodynamically instable petasol (2), which is isolated and characterised for the first time.
