Abstract

A major problem in the sulfite determination by anion chromatography is the oxidation of sulfite by atmospheric oxygen. Ways to prevent this oxidation have been investigated and the results of our study reveal that the sulfite oxidation by air can be arrested effectively by adding isopropanol to both eluent and sample. Under these conditions and provided the pH of the eluent < 7.0, one can measure the free sulfite concentration in the sample.
