While first reactions with low-valent titanium derivatives were carried out shortly after the discovery of the element Ti, the use of so-called Ti0-reagents in organic synthesis has emerged only recently. The pinacolization and direct coupling to olefins (McMurry reaction) of carbonyl compounds were applied to the synthesis of novel, fascinating compounds, such as «betweenanes» and «in, out-bicyclo[4.4.4]tetradecane.» Another new application is the coupling of imine derivatives to ethylene diamines. The mechanism of some of these reactions has been studied in more detail, especially with soluble low-valent Ti-complexes.
