Thin layer chromatography applied to commercial imipramine (Tofranil®) demonstrates the presence of less than 0.2% impurity. These impurities consist of eight compounds. The concentration of no single entity exceeds 0.05%. Highly fluorescent N-substituted acridines are present in amounts of less than 0.1%. On the basis of pharmacologic studies, these impurities could not lead to unfavorable side effects at the level in which they are present in commercial Tofranil®.
