Abstract

Criteria for the Evaluation of Balances

The present article discusses characteristic magnitudes that are of importance when the quality of a balance is being evaluated. Sometimes even well-versed specialists wrongly assess their value.
By way of example, a critical study reveals that readability and sensitivity are two magnitudes that are in no way connected with the accuracy of a balance.
The author arrives at the conclusion that only the accuracy of the calibrated set of weights and the precision of the optical scale range (measured by the standard deviation) are significant and should be utilized for evaluating a balance.
Both these values directly determine the true weight. They are the only values that can be objectively checked at any time and thus enable comparisons to be made between the various balances and makes.
