Abstract

For some elements analysis by thermal neutron activation is impossible or at least not enough sensitive. For example boron, carbon, nitrogen and oxygen cannot be determined with high sensitivity (10-8) by neutron activation.
In this article some results of a study of the possibilities in activation analysis with γ photons and charged particles are reported. The conditions for γ n activation of oxygen, nitrogen and carbon in trace analysis are given and the possibilities of γ activation analysis for some other elements are discussed.
Attention is drawn to the interest of developping the charged particles activation analysis not only for gases (O, N, C) but also for boron, titanium, iron and a large number of other elements.
Finally a study on oxygen activation analysis in aluminium is reported as an example which may show one can proceed to find the best conditions for a charged particles activation analysis in one particular material.
