The electron density and the electric field gradient at the nucleus in a crystal can be deduced from the isomer shift and the quadrupole splitting of a recoilless emitted γ ray. These properties allow an identification and a detailed discussion of the bond structure in many compounds. Chemical effects of nuclear reactions and nuclear transformations are also detectable by the structure of the recoilless emission spectrum. The basic principles of these applications are discussed and illustrated by a few typical measurements.
