Abstract

Isotopic exchanges form a special class of chemical reactions which are distinguished front all the others by certain characteristics peculiar to them. Their study gives interesting information of a fundamental nature on the reactional behaviour and the structure of the chemical elements involved in them. To know them and to take them into account is indispensable when applying techniques based on the use of radiotracers. Finally, they have recently found interesting analytical and preparatory applications in the field of the chemistry of isotopes. The author has attempted to illustrate these various aspects of isotopic exchange reactions by some characteristic examples taken from classical and recent scientific literature.
