The chemical base of popcorn polymer formation is described. Optical anisotropy of popcorn polymers and the corresponding straining of the polymer in microscopical dimensions are discussed. The mechanochemical character of proliferous polymerization is demonstrated on several systems; it is possible to induce a chemical process directly by mechanical damage of an appropriate polymer. The formation of new crosslinks during polymer poliferation is shown; it seems most probable that these crosslinks are formed by chain entanglements occurring during chain propagation. A certain specifity of the proliferation process is due to the reactivity of the monomers used. ESR spectroscopy allows to identify the free radicals occurring in popcorn polymer systems and to give some indications on their kinetic behavior.
