The solvation of the reacting species in the condensation reaction between anethole and acetaldehyde in the presence of cation exchange resins governs the reaction orientation towards 1,3-dioxacyclohexane, as its selectivity. As this point is taken into account, it is then possible to obtain the preferential formation of the dioxane heterocycle at the expense of the dimérisation of anethole and of the crotonisation of acetaldehyde.
