Abstract

After briefly outlining the history of the chemistry of organo-silicon compounds this paper reports the formation of cyclic siliconmethylene compounds. These products are obtained when Si(CH3)4 and methyl-chlorosilanes are submitted to pyrolysis. Subsequently investigations of the cleavage of silicon-carbon bonds are recorded, carried out on certain compounds by reaction with alkali, hydrogen halides or halogens, respectively and designed to extend the possibilities of analytical and preparative work in silicon chemistry. Detailed studies on the pyrolysis products of Si(CH3)4 have furnished results that make understandable the favoured formation of cyclic silicon-methylene compounds. The last part of this paper deals with organometallic reactions of (Cl3Si)2CCl2 and the stepwise organometallic synthesis of cyclic silicon-methylene compounds, e. g. the eight-membered ring [Si(CH3)2-CH2]4.
