Polymerisationskinetischer Nachweis von Radikalen im Redox-System [Co(dipy)3]+/CCl4/NaBH4

The redox process by which Co+ is oxidized to Co++ by CCl4, and reduced back to Co+ by NaBH4, produces radicals, able to initiate the polymerization of methylmethacrylate.
From the course of the polymerization it can be deduced that the reaction [Co(dipy)3]+ with CCl4 goes through an intermediate, which has a certain stability. Thermal decomposition of this intermediate produces radicals, probably ˙ CCl3 and the oxidation product of the cobalt compound. This latter is again reduced by NaBH4 and is thus recycled.
