The product prepared from dibromo-m-xylene by the Wurtz reaction was found by mass spectroscopy to contain higher ring systems in addition to [2,2]-metacyclophane. The first compound of this series to be isolated was tetra-m-xylylene ([2,2,2,2]-metacyclophane), the structure of which was elucidated by mass and NMR spectroscopy.
