Abstract

Qualitative and quantitative fullrange analysis always means analysis of a mixture, this includes also a so-called pure substance. The fullrange analysis is especially complicated in the case of trace analysis. Only a team of analytical instruments and methods is able to solve these problems fast, correct and with a minimum of costs. Analysis of mixtures needs separation methods. Direct coupling of a separation method with structure finding methods is a most successful team.
Limitations and possibilities are discussed on the basis of direct coupling of gas chromatography with

  • thin layer chromatography,
  • a low cost mass spectrometer,
  • specific detectors measuring the elements, some functional groups, some special substances,
  • radioactivation analysis
  • an infrared spectrophotometer.

Direct coupling of thin layer capillaries with a high resolution mass spectrometer is at present the most successful method to solve problems of fullrange analysis in organic chemistry. The analyst would like to couple capillary gas chromatography (open tubular columns) with a high speed micro infrared spectrometer. This should include data presentation and data finishing by a computer.
