The influence of the reaction conditions on the kinetics of the chlorination of acetic acid with gaseous chlorine under atmospheric pressure and with liquid chlorine under high pressure have been studied. In the last case the usually undesired formation of dichloroacetic acid is accelerated by the increased chlorine concentration in the liquid phase.
The most probable reaction mechanisms are tabulated.
