Vinyl interchange and related reactions are reviewed. For these reactions a reversible mercuration mechanism is supported by the isolation of corresponding organo mercuric intermediates. The feasibility and the yield of a given reaction are determined by the reactivities of the starting material and the product and by the interchange equilibrium. Benzotriazole shows an exceptional behaviour. Very high yields of its vinyl and allyl derivatives may be obtained and the formation of N-isopropenyl-benzotriazole is the only known isopropenyl interchange reaction.
