Certain electron-donor substances such as methanol, propylene oxide, ethyl acetate, are good solvents for PtCl4, and also strong reducing agents at somewhat elevated temperatures. This fact can be used for an easy preparation of very reactive hydrogenation catalysts. A suitable carrier material is impregnated with the salt solution, the excess solvent is evaporated, and the reduction is carried out heating the supported material 1 h to 150-200° in vacuo. Hydrogenation of 1-octene with such catalyst occurs with a rate of 250 moles H2/gAt Pt0 × min.
In the case of propylene oxyde a stable intermediate can be obtained which is soluble even in unpolar solvents, and has still a remarkable catalytic activity.
