Abstract

The photochemical isomerization of 2-methylindazole to 1-methylbenzimidazole is investigated with respect to the dependence of the quantum yield from wavelength of excitation, solvent, temperature and concentration. Theoretical considerations based on the change of bond orders upon excitation lead us to the assumption that the reaction starts from the lowest excited singlet-state. This is compatible with the results of experiments using sensitizers and quenchers.
