Abstract

In the first part of this paper a brief review is given of the current manufacturing processes of organotin compounds. A new modification of the so-called direct synthesis of dialkyltin dihalides is mentioned in which an organoantimony catalyst is used. Both the well-established, and some newly developed or practical uses of the several types of organotins are discussed.
In the second part a survey is given of results of prominent recent lines of research concentrating on work done at the authors’ laboratory. Addition reactions of organotin compounds containing an activated Sn–C bond, such as cyanomethyl- or acetonyl-tin derivatives, to aldehydes or ketones are mentioned. This reaction promises to become a valuable tool in organic synthesis for making β-hydroxy-substituted nitriles, ketones, esters, or amides. Further, hydrostannolysis of Group II metal-carbon bonds is discussed and the structure of the ensuing tin-metal compounds is considered. The latter research has, at last, given an entry into the field of organotin(II) compounds.
