Treatment of voacristine (V) by boiling glacial acetic acid led to a complex mixture, two constituents of which were shown to be desethylvoacangine (VII) and 4,20-dehydrovoacangine (VIII). A mechanism explaining the formation of these two derivatives is proposed.
