Abstract

A survey is presented of some recent high resolution nuclear magnetic resonance studies on the three-dimensional molecular structures in proteins. The first part of the paper deals with the basic properties of the proton NMR spectra of diamagnetic and paramagnetic protein molecules. This is followed by the description of several selected experiments, including studies of the thermal denaturation of lysozyme, the reaction of ribonuclease A with inhibitor molecules, and the coordination of the heme iron in cytochrome c.
