The generation of vinyl cations in the solvolysis of activated vinyl bromides was first demonstrated in 1964. Since then considerable evidence has accumulated showing that they are true intermediates in nucleophilic substitution and elimination reactions (SN1–E1) at olefinic carbon. The evidence includes rate and product studies, ion pair recombination, substituent and stereochemical effects.
