Abstract

Oxygen is generated under visible light illumination of highly acidic (0.5 M H2SO4) aqueous solutions of tris(2,2-bipyridine-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid)ruthenium(II) containing S2O82⊖ as electron acceptor in the absence of heterogeneous redox catalyst. An autocatalytic reaction mechanism is proposed.
