Abstract

Three discotic liquid crystalline derivatives (2, 3, and 5) of 1-amino-1-deoxy-scyllo-inositol are described. The polar molecules have a non-centrosymmetric structure and represent the first thermotropic discogens with lateral functions attached to the «core» through nitrogen. Moreover, 5 is the first mesogene at all containing an azido function. As has been found by microscopy these novel compounds exhibit mesophases of probably equal type (Dho) over very wide ranges of temperature, e.g. ΔT ≈ 229 °C for 3 which is about 100 °C wider than that one of its oxygen analogue, scyllo-inositol hexakis-hexanoate.
