Abstract

Saturated and unsaturated aliphatic thioethers have been formylated with the help of Vilsmeier reaction. The formylated compounds could have been isolated in 30-50 % yields in the form of their dimethylimmonium perchlorates.
These immonium perchlorates have been condensed with compounds containing active methyl or methylene group, to produce intermediates, which have been further used for the synthesis of symmetrical and unsymmetrical cyanine and related dyes.
