Abstract

Some important relationships between cement-content, consistence and compressive strength of concrete are discussed on the basis of the fundamental law of the influence of the watercement ratio. These relationships are rather complex, and they are in general not exactly understood by the men on the site. Consequently, the findings of modern concrete research are not at all or not enough taken into consideration.
The principles of concrete mix design are shortly described. With this method, the properties of fresh and hardened concrete can be optimalized as well as the costs and other factors. In this respect, the “cementpaste-batching” would be of great importance introducing new points of view on capacity, security and economy of concrete constructions. The empirical rules, still gouverning the practice on the site, as well as the standard regulations, are not making adequate use of the new knowledge.
