Abstract

In mechanical engineering, glass reinforced plastics are increasingly used for the production of highly stressed structural parts. As reinforced plastics consists of two components, glass and synthetic resin, which differ considerably in respect to their Young’s modulus, the stress distribution under load may be very different from the stress distribution in structures of identical shape but consisting of an uniform material. To investigate this difference in the stress pattern caused by bending forces, models composed of plastic rods with inserted layers of glass web and corresponding models of an uniform synthetic resin have been compared by photoelastic analysis.
