Abstract

The exchange of a proton (or of the ion CH3Hg+) between two donors differing by an electric charge only (Fig. 1, 2) is governed exclusively by electrostatic forces, and ΔG of such a process gives some experimental information on the effective dielectric constant εe to be used in considering the interaction of ions in solution. The enthalpy change ΔH of the proton transfer process on the other hand is dependent not only on εe, but also on ∂εe/∂T. The results (Fig. 3 and 4) explain the fact that ion association due to electrostatic forces (hard donors and acceptors) are entropy controlled mainly.
