Abstract

The Birch-reduction of [2.2]paracyclophane led to a dihydro- and a tetrahydro-derivative. The structures of these two new ring systems were confirmed by UV-, NMR- and mass spectra analyses. Both reduction products are sensitive to temperature. Tetrahydro[2.2]paracyclophane undergoes dehydrogenation to dihydro[2.2]paracyclophane and [2.2]paracyclophane on heating.
