Chemistry as a science, as a field of applied research, an industrial endeavour, and as a profession is increasingly confronted with a number of difficulties. From a science mainly concerned with its own chemical objectives, it has in the course of the last decades developed into a mature discipline largely involved in a multitude of interdisciplinary and specialized scientific and technological fields, in many of which the objectives are set by non-chemists. Some aspects and consequences of this situation are discussed in the following talk before the Basle Chemical Society on June 5 th, 1980.
