The first synthesis of the optically active geranylgeranial oxide (S)-1 starting from D-mannitol including a sulfone coupling reaction as the key step is reported. Racemic phytoene oxide 2 was synthesized for the first time by coupling racemic 1 with geranylgeranyl-Wittig salt 18.
