A photoelectrochemical cell with 1.1 V open circuit potential, short-time storage capacity, and high cell voltage is described. The cell is based on the photochemical decomposition of silver chloride into metallic silver and chlorine gas. Its open circuit potential is determined by the electromotive force [Ag;AgCl:HCl(1M):Cl⊖;½Cl2],E0 = 1.14V. Two cells in series can be used for photodecomposition of water to yield oxygen and hydrogen. It is the only photogalvanic cell known which makes possible such an experiment. Spectral sensitization can be achieved.
