The red dye which is formed by the action of atmospheric oxygen on the Fischer base has been identified as a salt of bis- [1.3.3-trimethylindolenine-(2)]-trimethinecyanine. Compounds which bind formaldehyde are suitable as stabilisers for preventing the formation of this dye in the storage of the Fischer base.
