Abstract

The last missing link in the series of binary sulfur fluorides SF2, which is produced in minor quantities by the reaction of silver fluoride and sulfur but not from the decomposition of either FSSF or SSF2, could be prepared in high yield by the reaction of SCl2 with mercuric fluoride at low vapour pressures. Sulfur difluoride is a very unstable compound which decomposes rapidly into sulfur, sulfur tetrafluoride and disulfur difluoride.
